Kibbe Body Type Quiz

This Kibbe body type quiz matches you to one of 10 Kibbe types in about three minutes. You answer 12 questions about your height, vertical line, bones, softness and features. Your result shows the clothing lines and shapes that work with your frame.

Kibbe is about lines, not size or weight. No type is better than another, and none of them is about changing your body. Think of this Kibbe test as a way to see which shapes feel easy on you.

This quiz is a guide inspired by David Kibbe's system. It is not made or endorsed by Kibbe, and it cannot give you an official typing.

Twelve questions about your height, vertical line, bone structure, softness and features. Each answer points toward one or two Kibbe types, and the type with the most points is your result.

About 3 minutes 12 questions

Before you start

  • Answer for your frame as it is now, not as you would like it to be.
  • Think about your bones and overall line, not your clothing size.
  • If two answers fit, pick the one a friend would choose for you.

What is Kibbe?

Kibbe is a style system created by American image consultant David Kibbe. He set it out in his 1987 book, Metamorphosis. It sorts people by the overall lines of their body and face, then matches those lines to clothing.

The system rests on two ideas. Yang means long, sharp, straight or angular. Yin means soft, rounded, small or delicate. Every body mixes both, and the balance between them points to a type.

Kibbe groups the types into five families. Dramatic leans yang and sharp. Natural is yang with a blunt, broad edge. Classic sits in balance. Gamine mixes opposites in a compact frame. Romantic leans yin and soft.

How this Kibbe body type quiz works

Each answer adds points to one or two types. Height counts for little, because Kibbe types come in many heights. Bone structure, softness and the way your line reads carry more weight. The type with the most points wins.

Kibbe's original book described 13 types. His newer teaching uses 10. We also use 10, but our list differs slightly. We keep Classic as a middle result for very balanced frames, and we fold Theatrical Romantic into Romantic.

The 10 Kibbe body types

Each type is a set of lines, not a body shape or a size. Here is the short version of each, from the most yang to the most yin.

What to do with your Kibbe body type

Start with one piece. Take the key shape from your result, such as a wrap dress or a cropped jacket, and try it next to a piece you usually wear. Look at the whole outline in a full-length mirror.

If your result feels wrong, read the runner-up and the types beside it in the same family. Kibbe himself warns that quizzes and photos can mislead, so treat your result as a hypothesis to test.

Frequently asked questions

Your Kibbe body type is the set of lines your frame and features share. You find it by looking at your vertical line, bone structure, flesh and face together. The quiz above does this with 12 questions, then suggests the type that fits your answers best.

No. We wrote this quiz using David Kibbe's published ideas, but he did not create or review it. Only Kibbe or a consultant he trained can give an official typing. Use your result as a starting point for trying clothes.

Kibbe's view is that your type stays the same through weight changes, because it comes from bone structure and overall line. Your clothing size may change, but the shapes that suit you usually do not. Retake the quiz if you answered based on a past body.

Not on its own. Height is one clue, but the way your line reads matters more. A narrow, angular frame can look long at an average height, and a broad one can look shorter. That is why height carries few points in our quiz.

No. Body shape systems compare bust, waist and hip measurements. Kibbe looks at bones, softness and facial features as a whole. Two people with the same measurements can be different Kibbe types and suit different clothes.
