Soft (Muted) Summer Color Palette
The soft summer color palette is a range of cool, greyed, medium colors: grey-blue, dusty rose, muted teal, mauve, sage and taupe. Soft Summer, sometimes called Muted Summer, is the summer season where softness leads and a blue-based undertone follows. Every shade looks as if a little rain-cloud grey has been stirred into it.
This page is for you if your coloring is gentle and blended, silver suits you better than gold, and both black and bright white look severe. You will find all 30 soft summer colors with hex codes, plus makeup, soft summer hair color ideas, outfits and clear tests against Soft Autumn and Cool Summer.

How to read this palette
Muting comes first in the soft summer palette. Each color has been cooled and greyed, like a watercolour on damp paper, so nothing looks freshly saturated. Even the strongest accents, muted berry and soft raspberry, read as smoky rather than vivid.
Undertone comes second and points cool. The blues are slate and denim, the pinks are mauve and rose, and the greens borrow blue or grey: eucalyptus, dusty aqua, misty spruce. Gentle in-between shades such as taupe, sage and cocoa grey sit near neutral, which is why this season mixes so easily.
Depth stays in the middle. Soft oyster and mist blue are your palest shades; smoky navy, graphite and deep teal grey are your darkest. Most of the palette lives between them, at the depth of a pewter jug or a lake on an overcast afternoon.
What is Soft Summer?
Soft Summer is a cool, smoky season of greyed blues, roses and sea greens. Your colors look like a summer sea under cloud: grey-blue, dusty rose, muted teal and mauve. Bright, warm or very dark shades sit too loudly on your face.
- Skin: light to medium-deep with a neutral-cool or rosy-beige cast. It can look pale or grey in strong colors and comes alive in muted rose.
- Hair: ash blonde, light to medium ash brown or a smoky mid brown, usually with little visible gold or red. It is sometimes called dishwater blonde or brown.
- Eyes: grey, grey-blue, grey-green, soft teal or a cool hazel with a grey outer ring. The color is blended rather than crisp.
- Contrast: low to low-medium. Your features sit close together in depth, so nothing jumps out.
- Next to bright colors your face looks tired by comparison, while smoky shades make your skin look smooth and your eyes clearer.
A quick self-test
Do the rose-and-coral check. Sit by a window without makeup and hold up a dusty rose cloth, then a peachy coral one. If rose gives your cheeks a natural flush and coral turns your skin yellowish, your undertone is cool. Next, compare a grey-blue cloth with a cobalt one. If cobalt looks loud and grey-blue looks right, Soft Summer fits.
Best Soft Summer neutrals
You never need black. Smoky navy and graphite do its job for coats, trousers and boots, and soft oyster replaces bright white. Taupe, pewter and cocoa grey are the gentle middle neutrals that link every other color in your palette.
Colors Soft Summer should avoid

- Jet Black#0A0A0A
- Hot Pink#E6287A
- Cobalt#1E4FD8
- Kelly Green#3FA34D
- Tangerine#F28C38
- Mustard#CF9A2E
- Rust#B5562E
Two kinds of color work against you. Clear brights such as hot pink, cobalt and kelly green are too saturated, so they outshine soft features. Earthy warm shades such as tangerine, mustard and rust carry yellow that turns your skin sallow. Optic white and jet black add a contrast your face does not have.
Metals and jewelry
- Brushed silver
- Pewter
- White gold
- Matte rose gold
Cool metals belong to you, but give them a quiet surface. Brushed, satin or matte silver, pewter and white gold blend into your coloring, while mirror-bright chrome can look hard. Matte rose gold is a gentle warm-leaning option. Grey pearls, moonstone, labradorite and rose quartz sit nicely alongside any of them.
Soft Summer makeup
Your best match is usually labelled neutral, neutral-cool or rosy beige. Test it on the side of your face in daylight. A yellow shade makes you look tired; a very pink one makes you look flushed.

Soft Summer hair colors
Smoky ash brown
Keeps your natural blended look. A cool gloss every few months stops it turning brassy.
Soft ash babylights
Very fine, beige-free highlights brighten light brown hair while keeping contrast low.
Greige blonde
A grey-beige blonde between ash and neutral; good if pure ash looks flat on you.
Cool rose brown
A brown with a faint rose or plum tint, for brunettes who want a change without warmth.
Natural grey
Grey hair is cool and muted like your palette, so letting it grow in usually works with your colors, not against them.
Hair colors to avoid
- Golden, honey or caramel blonde, which looks yellow beside cool skin.
- Copper, auburn and bright red, which are both too warm and too strong.
- Jet black or very dark espresso, which frames soft features too heavily.
Nail colors for Soft Summer
Cream and satin polishes keep your nails in tune with your palette; skip neon and heavy chrome. Mauve and taupe are the easiest everyday shades, and muted berry works for evenings.
Soft Summer clothing and outfit tips
- Start every outfit with a cool grey or blue-grey base, then add one muted color. Pewter trousers with a dusty rose knit show the idea in miniature.
- Combine shades that sit close in depth. Grey-blue with mist blue looks calm; mauve with taupe looks quietly polished.
- For a statement, reach for muted berry or soft raspberry instead of red. They give you presence without glare.
- Let texture do the work: heathered wool, washed linen, jersey and matte silk. Shiny patent and stiff satin fight your softness.
- Denim in a grey or faded mid-blue wash flatters you more than a dark rinse or bright stonewash.
- Swap brown leather for grey, taupe or smoky navy, so the outfit stays cool from head to toe.

Build a small capsule wardrobe
- Choose two cool neutrals as the backbone, such as smoky navy for outerwear and pewter for trousers.
- Replace the white shirt with soft oyster and mist blue, which look clean but never stark.
- Pick three accents in one mood, such as dusty rose, muted teal and mauve. They work with each other and with every neutral.
- Give your one bolder piece, a dress or a scarf, a muted berry or soft raspberry color for evenings.

- Prints should be as blended as you are: soft-edged florals, watercolour stripes and cloudy abstracts in two or three greyed colors.
- Keep contrast low. A mauve and grey paisley works; a navy and white polka dot looks too crisp.
- Small and medium scales sit best, since big bold graphics pull attention away from your face.
- Heathered tweed, marled knits and faded chambray act as quiet patterns on their own.
Accessories and natural materials
- Grey, taupe or smoky navy leather and suede for bags, belts and shoes.
- Glasses in grey-blue, soft taupe, translucent grey or brushed silver, not black or bright tortoiseshell.
- Stones with a misty look: grey pearl, moonstone, labradorite, rose quartz and blue chalcedony.
- Natural materials in faded tones: grey linen, washed cotton, felt, driftwood and pale shell.
How to tell Soft Summer from Soft Autumn and Cool Summer
Soft Summer vs Soft Autumn
- What you share
- Both seasons are soft first. Your colors and Soft Autumn's are greyed, medium in depth and low in contrast, and both palettes include sage and taupe.
- What differs
- The split is temperature. Soft Summer leans blue, so its pinks turn mauve and its greens turn toward eucalyptus and teal. Soft Autumn leans golden, toward camel, olive and coral. Brushed silver suits you; brushed gold suits Soft Autumn.
- How to tell which you are
- Put on a mauve top, then an olive one, and watch the skin around your mouth and eyes. If olive makes that area look grey or greenish, you are Soft Summer. If mauve looks lifeless and olive looks healthy, check Soft Autumn.
- Colors to borrow from Soft Autumn
- Soft Autumn is your warmer twin, and the neutral ends of the two palettes meet. Taupe, sage and cocoa grey are shared ground. Leave its coral, camel and olive behind; they carry too much yellow.

Soft Summer vs Cool Summer
- What you share
- Both are blue-based summers that suit silver jewelry, rosy pinks and blue-greys. Neither looks right in orange, black or golden brown.
- What differs
- Cool Summer is cool first, with clearer raspberry, cornflower and soft navy. Soft Summer is soft first, so its versions are smokier: muted berry, grey-blue and smoky navy. Cool Summer also carries a little more contrast.
- How to tell which you are
- Compare a cornflower blue top with a grey-blue one. If cornflower makes your eyes brighter, Cool Summer may suit you. If it seems louder than you are and grey-blue blends in, you are Soft Summer.
- Colors to borrow from Cool Summer
- On days you want more brightness, edge toward Cool Summer. Soft raspberry, soft denim and lavender grey are the clearest corners of your palette and lean toward its raspberry, denim and lilac.

Soft Summer questions
Yes. Muted Summer is another name for this season, where softness is the main trait and coolness the second. Analysts pick different words, but the palette is the same: greyed, cool and medium in depth. If a chart shows dusty rose, grey-blue and muted teal, it describes this season.
We don't list soft summer celebrities. A photo is a poor guide, since lighting, editing and hair dye shift how coloring reads. Our quiz plus a few daylight fabric tests will tell you more about yourself.
Optic white is too bright beside low-contrast features and can make your skin look grey. Choose soft oyster, pale rose grey or mist blue for shirts and tees instead. From a distance they read as white, yet they stay in your key.
Black is far darker and harder than anything in your natural coloring, so it draws the eye to shadows under your eyes and around your mouth. Smoky navy, graphite and charcoal blue give the same smart effect with a softer edge.
Often, yes. Natural grey is cool and muted, which matches your palette. It can lower your contrast further, so add definition elsewhere: a mauve or berry lip and slightly deeper glasses frames. A cool gloss keeps any yellowing away.
